Traditional holidays to Egypt will usually consist of a trip to the famous pyramids, tombs of long past kings and queens, a cruise down the River Nile or a stay at a luxury Red Sea beach resort. There's so much more to this country than tombs and five star beach resorts and if you take the time to do a bit of exploring away from the crowds of traditional tourists, you can have an even more fulfilling experience.
A typical Nile cruise won't take you much farther than the city of Aswan in the south of Egypt. However, some cruises will have an optional extension to Lake Nasser, which is an enormous reservoir that was formed with the creation of the controversial High Dam in Aswan. This beautiful stretch of water is 550km long and up to 35km wide and has become a popular sport fishing location. It is also a place to explore some of the lesser known temples of Egypt and the popular Abu Simbel.
One of the best experiences you can have on an Egypt holiday is to spend some time in the remote and undeveloped mountainous area of Sinai Peninsula. This stunning landscape is sparsely populated by the Bedouin, the desert dwelling nomads of the Sinai, who have set up a number of camps where you can go and sleep under the stars. Make sure you go with a guide on your desert adventure as it will get ferociously hot and it would be very easy to get lost amongst the mountains and rocky terrain. The best way to experience the Sinai is to head on a 4x4 multi day tour that follows ancient caravan routes.
For those interested in more recent history than the pharaohs and tombs of ancient Egypt, you should head to El Alamein on the north coast of Egypt. This was the site of a famous World War II tank battle that was seen as one of the most decisive Allied victories of the war. Fought between Commander Montgomery of the Allied troops and Rommel, one of Germany's best generals. El Alamein has a number of war memorials and cemeteries to honour the 11,000 men who lay buried there. You can also visit Rommel's cave where the German general made his headquarters.
Of course the draw of pyramids, beautiful Red Sea beach resorts and luxury Nile cruises can be tough to get away from, but holidays to Egypt can be something much more if you take yourself away from the crowds of tourists and bustling cities.
