If you've lived in a big town for your whole life or have moved into your first proper home, there's a high chance this will be the first time you've ever had the responsibility of looking after a garden for yourself. While being confronted with a patch of ground and plenty of unfamiliar tasks and jobs - from lawn mowing to weeding - you could find that the experience an extremely rewarding one. The important thing to remember is that gardening for beginners does have to be difficult, you just need to make some decisions from the outset.

When moving into a property that already has a garden, you need to assess how much time and attention it's going to need. For example, have the previous owners been keen gardeners who spent hours every week tending their rose bushes? If so, you may need to make some harsh choices about the way you want the garden to look.

For beginners, a garden with a number of small trees and shrubbery bordering a simple lawn is probably the easiest choice to maintain. Hardy plants that don't need much watering or attention are the best choice and things such as evergreens are a great choice for anyone who doesn't expect to have much time to devote to their garden. Looking after a lawn can be quite easy too, although it will need to be mowed and probably watered in the summer.

However, if you think that looking after the lawn will prove difficult to fit into your schedule, it might be a good idea for you to consider putting down paving stones or gravel. While this will give your garden a different vibe, you can still make sure it has a welcoming and natural air by incorporating a number of plants and easily maintained flowerbeds around the edges.

Many people who have a garden for the first time may find that growing simple fruits or vegetables gives them greater excitement and more incentive to take care of their garden. Plants such as root vegetables or strawberry plants are good choices for the UK, and can be nurtured without too much expense. By growing eatables, you'll also have the chance to make sure your garden is functional even if you're not too bothered about making it attractive. However, it's easy to make sure gardens are pleasing to look at even when they are providing food too.

The best thing to remember when taking over a garden for the first time, is that looking at some picture guides of plants could prove invaluable when you start weeding for the first time - it can be difficult to tell the difference between some gardening plants and weeds if you've an untrained eye. When you make your first moves into taking over a garden, don't forget that there's nothing wrong with a little trial and error and that many people find that the more effort they put into making their garden nice the more they appreciate and enjoy it.
