For millions of people a great Saturday night in means settling down to watch their favourite movie on the small screen. But no matter what movie is playing there is always the wish that it could look and sound better.
The way we watch movies at home has undergone a radical transformation over the past 10 years with people constantly looking for enhancements to make their movie-watching feel more like the experience of the cinema. Flat screen TVs, crisper HD pictures and high quality sound are a must for any dedicated movie fan. and with technology fast catching up with consumer needs, the new Blu-ray disc is set to join their wish list.
With DVDs just over ten years old there doesn't seem like much need for a new type of movie storage, but there is a wealth of evidence to support the rise of Blu-ray as it looks set to take over from the humble DVD.
The most important advancement that Blu-ray offers is the picture quality. Being an HD disc, it offers superior picture and sounds to its viewers and is being hailed as the ultimate luxury in movie watching at home. The name comes from the violet laser that's used to read the disk. This laser allows the disk to store up to six times the amount of information than a DVD so there is room for all those juicy extras as well as the enhanced picture.
Blu-ray was originally in competition with the popular HD-DVD but won out after it was endorsed by some of the biggest movie manufacturers in the world. Recently most movie distributors are backing Blu-ray and have started producing the disks for all their major movies. It's not just new films that are available on Blu-ray, many classics such as Casablanca and The Wizard of Oz are getting a makeover so you can relive your old favourites as if they were made only yesterday.
This positive endorsement from the film industry has seen Blu-ray propelled in to the lead in home entertainment becoming widely available from more than 200 of the world biggest retailers. Prices are also beginning to come down and in some cases are rivalling the cost of a new DVD.
Currently Blu-ray disks can be played on Blu-ray players and
PS3 consoles and after the phasing out of DVDs will be adorning video shop walls near you.
So, if you're looking for a great addition to your fancy flat screen and surround sound speakers then Blu-ray is most definitely the new king when it comes to your home cinema experience.
