We're living in exciting times. The technological revolution is in full swing so you'd better hang onto your hats as we're in for a rollercoaster ride.

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of modern day technology is the speed at which it's evolving. It has only been a little over a decade since the internet took the world by storm and there has been no looking back. We saw the rise of the 'dot-com bubble' in Silicon Valley at the start of the millennium, when ideas scrawled on napkins made millionaires over night, and then there was the subsequent dot-com crash.

Gadgets have been getting smaller and smaller too, with desktop computers turning into laptop computers which have in turn evolved into compact netbooks. Then there's an entirely separate mobile internet market for tablets, iPhones and a whole array of portable communication devices, helping to ensure we're switched onto the World Wide Web wherever we may be.

The portability of technology is perhaps what's shaping the world we live and work in most of all. GPS systems in cars and on handheld devices mean that people can find their way around any city at the first time of asking.

Ask your grandparents to turn the wireless on and they'll likely switch on a battery-operated radio. Ask the same question of your teenage kid, and they'll probably say it's already on as they're in the middle of playing a role-playing game online with an anonymous friend in cyberspace.

So technology is getting smaller and wires are disappearing altogether, with surfers connecting to the internet at home, university, in airport lounges and hotels, with no wires in sight.

Peripherals too seem to be losing their cable connectivity, with keyboards, mice and printers all talking to each other through thin-air. So in effect, you can be browsing the web sitting in the living room, and send a file to wi-fi printers anywhere in the house.

Consumer culture and international business is unrecognisable to what it was a mere two decades ago. A bedroom business with nothing more than a networked computer and a touch of entrepreneurial savvy can 'go global' and compete with large corporate conglomerates; whilst e-commerce facilitates a 24/7 shopping culture, whereby you can bank, buy holidays, order groceries, play poker and do just about anything else without leaving the comfort of your sofa.

The technological revolution is in full swing and it's showing no sign of slowing. A lot has happened in the past ten years and who knows what the next ten will bring?
